You May or May Not remember our post a few weeks ago about many businesses asking us what best suits their business. A Website or Social Media Page. Well today we have a further update on this and a bit more on the What If?
Social Media especially Facebook is a great tool for any business, and we have a few businesses contacting us telling us that websites are out of date and how they can post one ad on Facebook and it can be seen by 5k people. This is excellent to get such a lot of views on a particular article but What If Facebook shut its doors tomorrow and all content was removed? How would your business be affected?. This is something Many of these businesses had not thought about. They hadn’t even thought about the people they are targeting by being on Facebook an not on Instagram. Or not allowing users to contact them via WhatsApp.
If Social Media is your only form of internet presence your business would pretty much disappear overnight if those platforms closed. There is nothing you can do to stop a social media platform closing its doors because your business depends on it.
With an ever-increasing demand put on internet services Social media will reach a limit of visitors to their sites. Think over the last decade how many times people have reported they are leaving Facebook, deleting their account. Now they do this for reasons like data protection and privacy issues. Also, as new platforms launch, they slowly chip away at the market share of Facebook. Putting all your business on one platform is therefore risking your business in the future.
A survey completed in 2019 asked respondents what app they could least do without and for the first time Facebook slipped into second position.

If we break this information down further into age groups

We can see that Facebook is only the top app that they people aged 36-55 can’t live without. For some businesses this might seem fine but with the constant changing of the landscape businesses need to think now of their future business model.
Facebook user base is slowing and indeed declining in some markets around the world. Other social media platforms are taking market share from one another. Do you want your business to have to migrate to different social media platforms as your loyal customers switch hoping that they will find you on other social media channels? Or do you decide to invest in a web presence with your own website that your customers can always find online no matter what social media platform they are registered with. So, if Facebook closed down tomorrow your users will always be able to contact you and keep up to date with your business.
Many social media platforms have closed mainly down to dwindling numbers. We are not saying this will happen to Facebook but in life anything is a possibility as we have seen with previous high performers in the Social Media market such as:
- Google +
- Vine
- Tumblr
- Bebo
- MySpace
And we haven’t even got to the section of the UK Population that don’t even use Social Media at all.
According to Statista “Of the total population of the UK, 66 percent of people are Facebook users” but we can see that According to the ONS (Office for National Statistics) ”96% of households in Great Britain had internet access, up from 93% in 2019 and 57% in 2006 when comparable records began.”
This is an untapped market for your business if you are solely running from a social media platform
This is why we say that a Website is a Hub for your online presence with social media being there as your Marketing Tool.
